We highly recommend that you download this software and play around with it.
This is a pretty good piece of commercial software, costing about $90 USD. The software is good for simply practicing hands, doing some simulations, and getting a feel for the game. The computer opponents are not very realistic, and the "advisor" doesn't always give the best advice, but overall, the program can probably help to turn a pure novice into a winning player in limit games up to $1/2.
This software is comparable to Turbo Texas Holdem (TTH), though the user interface is not as easy to use. The program is quite a bit cheaper than TTH if you plan on using software to practice a variety of poker games, and buy the limit collection bundle (Texas Holdem, Omaha Hi, Omaha Hi/Low, Seven Card Stud, Seven Card Stud Hi/Lo).
Almost all serious online poker players use this software. By requesting online sites to email you your hand histories, you can very easily track your play (finding leaks in your game, profit/loss overall and on specific starting hands) and maintain a database of the play of all of your opponents. The software can be used on a trial basis, and registered for $55.
