POKER MOVIE REVIEWS

When you start playing online poker
, you begin to notice how pervasive the game is in popular culture. Poker and poker references are in our movies, television shows, everyday slang, and music.

When you take a break from playing online poker and perusing our site, you may want to check out some of the best poker movies which we have reviewed.

Poker Movie Reviews:

1) The Cincinnati Kid (1965) --- Starring Steve McQueen, Edward G. Robinson, Ann-Margret, Kalr Malden, and Tuesday Weld.

This is probably the one of the best poker movies of all time. The plot leads up to a big game where Steve McQueen, a young upcoming poker professional, takes on Edward G. Robinson, who is considered to be the best poker player in the country.

Even though the poker game that they play is 5-card stud (a game which is rarely found anymore), there are a lot of great poker scenes and poker quotes.

One of my favorite lines:
--How the hell did you know that I didn’t have the king or the ace?
--I recollect a young man putting the same question to Eddie the Dude. "Son," Eddie told him, "all you paid was the looking price. Lessons are extra."

2) Rounders (1998) --- Starring Matt Damon, Edward Norton, John Turturro, Gretchen Mol, John Malkovich, and Famke Janssen.

Matt Damon plays a law-student who returns to playing poker to help out a child-hood friend (Edward Norton) who owes money to the wrong people. The movie is helped popularize Texas Holdem and expose it to a wide audience. There are a few clips of Johnny Chan beating Eric Seidel in the World Series of Poker, along with a lot of underground poker playing.

After shooting this movie, Matt Damon and Edward Norton became fans of the game of Texas Holdem and entered the World Series of Poker championship event in 1998. Matt Damon was knocked out of the poker tournament on the first day by poker legend Doyle Brunson.

3) The Sting (1973) --- Starring Paul Newman, Robert Redford, Robert Shaw, and Charles Durning.

This is mainly a story about con-men and gangsters, but is has a few poker scenes in it. The poker game played is five card draw.

The movie won seven Oscars that year, including Best Picture. Though slight in poker content, it is a movie that any gambler would enjoy.
